This term our story is the Magic Paintbrush which is a well loved traditional story from China.

We chose it because the story givens us lots of creative opportunities across the curriculum and some great characters and settings to explore in our literacy lessons.

Our main focus in literacy this term is to write vivid character and place descriptions using language that brings those people and places to life.

Our main area for development in maths this term is to build children’s confidence in place value as well as reinforcing the children’s skills in addition and subtraction.

If parents can find time to do just one thing to help us this term we would love them to spend time reading and talking about their reading with their children every da. It is almost impossible to overstate the help daily booktalk gives to children in building their confidence – not just in reading but across the curriculum. If you can help with your child’s maths please practice skip counting in 2, 3, 5 and 10′s. If your child is confident in this you could start your child from numbers other than 0 – for example, you could skip count in threes from twenty "20, 23, 26, 29, 32…" don’t forget to count down as well as up. – "32, 29, 26, 23 20…" One last thing to practice is number bonds – if I give you a number, what number goes with it to make ten? 7 and 3, 1 and 9 and so on.
