We're Going on a Bear Hunt book image

This term our story is ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen with Helen Oxenbury. We chose it because it’s a familiar and well-loved story with lots of repeating parts that the children can join in with. The ‘Bear Hunt’ also has lots of great vocabulary to get our children really enjoying language together. Why not read it together at home and see how much of the language has stuck with the children?

We have done lots of bear themed activities – we made bear face sandwiches! We made a bear together – see if you can find it in our cave.

We have retold the story using small world play, which has gone really well, and we have made our own story maps.

As well as our story work we have been doing lots of sorting and counting. We have been listening to lots of environmental sounds, which is a great first step into phonics. A bit later, we will be playing with musical instruments and getting really good at talking, and thinking, about sound.

To get children used to thinking about seasons and the passage of time we have planted bulbs like daffodils and crocuses and we are looking forward to those coming up in the spring. Perhaps you could plant some at home?
